A rise in violence towards
education and social work staff
in south west Scotland has been
described as "disappointing" and
"not acceptable".
A
report to Dumfries and Galloway
Council shows an increase in
"reported accidents" involving
its staff.
Health and safety manager George
Brown said it was due entirely
to violent incidents in
children's services.
The majority of cases came from
one children's home when four
young people were in care at the
same time.
The report shows a rise to 191
employee accidents in the last
quarter - compared with just 84
for the previous three months.
Verbally abused
Most of the increase is
attributable to a rise in the
violence category.
Mr Brown said the issue would
require management action to
address.
However, he stressed the
situation was not as bad as it
appeared due to multiple reports
of the same incident.
"When incidents occurred
involving several of the young
people it required intervention
by several members of staff to
restore order," he said.
"For example, if three young
people verbally abused four
members of staff during one
disturbance it could generate 12
reports which explains the
sudden increase to 119
accident/incident reports for
this quarter."
The full report will go before
councillors later this week.
